The Dental Center in Kigali is a humanitarian initiative and modern private clinic with an educational program to train a new generation of Rwandan dentists.
The roof canopies shading the buildings are inspired by the traditional Rwandan basket-making craftmanship, a symbol of unity, community and resurrection of the war-torn country. The convex shape of the “basket roofs” reproduces the traditional geometric patterns that contrast with the clean and high-tech interiors of the clinic.
The facilities are arranged on two different levels following the sloping terrain, recreating the open-air community spaces and informal meeting areas found in a small town. Passages and views are opened up over the eucalyptus park.
The sloping terrain is subdivided through a series of terracing walls that provide support to the buildings and prevent the natural erosion of the terrain.As no technical infrastructure is available on the terrain, rainwater is collected from the roofs, filtered, stored and gravity fed to the buildings. Composting toilets are installed, and the waste separated, treated and used as fertilizer. An array of PV panels on the roofs provides the whole facility with renewable energy.
